The De La Warr Community Highways scheme is underway in East Grinstead, to the delight of local Conservative county councillor Jacquie Russell.
The works will improve pedestrian access to a key part of the town.
The walkway and pavement are being constructed and, from 12th June, the traffic-calming and raised informal crossing point outside the theatre will be initiated.
Cllr Russell submitted this proposal, for the benefit of residents and visitors, with community support.
"The overall approved scheme will see the removal of the steps from Chequer Mead car park replaced with a footway making it easier for those with mobility issues or families with buggies etc, coupled with traffic calming measures on De La Warr Road", explains Cllr Russell. "It will be a significant improvement on the existing situation and I am delighted to see the idea coming to fruition,"
